Ten fun facts about Poland


Fact 1
The country boasts 17 Nobel laureates and includes five in literature and four peace prizes.

Fact 2
Marie Curie is one of Poland’s most famous Nobel Prize winners. Born Maria Sklodowska, she is the first and only person to be awarded a Nobel Prize for two different sciences.

Fact 3
Poland’s Nicolaus Copernicus was the first scientist to put forth the theory that it was the sun that was the center of the solar system.

Fact 4
Johannes Hevelius, the Polish astronomer published the very first exact maps of the moon.

Fact 5
During the popular Polish holiday, St John’s Kupala, it is a tradition for people to leap over fires. This particular tradition actually predates Christianity.

Fact 6
The Pizza that is made and served in Poland does not contain any tomato sauce. At restaurants, waiters will simply bring a pitcher-full of sauce to your table and pour it over the pizza. More often than not, the sauce is just ketchup.

Poland airs a Pope channel on television. Anyone who wishes to see the pope has to simply switch on the television.

Fact 8
The biggest and most popular European open-air music festival is held annually in Poland. The Przystanek Woodstock free rock festival has been named after the Woodstock Festival.

There is a unique method of peeling bananas here. They are peeled not from the stem end but the blossom end.

Fact 10
Dogs here are very popularly named “Burek”. Translated into English it means “brownish-grey color”.
